Last Mile Delivery

The final leg to the recipient's door — the most expensive segment per parcel and the only one the customer sees.

Also calledLast-mileFinal mile

Last mile is the delivery from the final hub to the recipient. It is the most expensive leg per unit in almost every network, because a vehicle covers short distances between many stops, spends much of its time stationary, and frequently fails to complete a delivery first time.

Failed attempts are the dominant cost driver. Every repeat visit duplicates the whole cost of the first, so first-attempt success rate is the metric that governs last-mile economics far more than route distance. Notifying the recipient with an accurate arrival window is usually the cheapest available improvement.

It is also the only part of the chain the end customer experiences directly. A consignment can move flawlessly for 1,400 kilometres and still be judged a failure because the final delivery was late or the rider was unreachable, which is why last mile absorbs a disproportionate share of service investment.
