First Mile

The initial leg — moving goods from the seller or plant into the transport network.

Also calledFirst-mile pickup

First mile covers everything between the origin and the first consolidation point: pickup from a seller, collection from a factory gate, or a milk run around several suppliers. It is where the consignment enters the network and where its data is created.

Data quality set here propagates everywhere. If weight, dimensions and address are captured badly at pickup, every downstream decision — vehicle allocation, load planning, route sequencing, billing — inherits the error. It is far cheaper to weigh and measure once at pickup than to discover a mis-declared consignment at a hub at midnight.

First mile is also disproportionately expensive per kilogram, because vehicles run partly empty while collecting. Milk runs and scheduled pickup windows exist mainly to attack that inefficiency.
