FTL (Full Truckload)
A shipment that occupies an entire vehicle, moving direct from origin to destination.
In an FTL movement one consignor's goods fill the vehicle and it runs point to point with no intermediate handling. The customer pays for the vehicle rather than for the weight, so the rate is quoted per trip or per kilometre for the lane.
FTL is chosen for more than volume. Because the load is never unpacked or transhipped, it is faster and the damage risk is lower, which is why high-value, fragile and time-critical consignments often move FTL even when they do not physically fill the truck.
The economics turn on the return leg. A vehicle that runs loaded one way and empty back has to recover the whole round trip from a single one-way rate. This is why backhaul matching is the single largest lever in FTL profitability, and why lane pairing dominates how FTL operators plan.
