Freight Rate Per Km
What a customer pays per kilometre — the price side of the equation that cost per km has to clear.
Freight rate per kilometre is the price charged, usually derived from a lane rate divided by lane distance. It is set by market conditions, vehicle type, commodity, urgency and the balance of freight availability in each direction, which is why the same truck can earn very different rates on the outbound and return legs of one trip.
Rates on a lane are rarely symmetric. A corridor with heavy manufacturing at one end and consumption at the other has abundant freight one way and scarce freight back, so return rates sit well below outbound. Operators who treat a lane as one rate rather than two directional rates consistently misprice.
The discipline is simple to state and hard to enforce: no rate should be accepted below cost per revenue kilometre plus target contribution, and that test must run at quotation rather than at month-end. Fleets that only discover unprofitable lanes in the management accounts have already carried them for a quarter.
