Cost Per Kilometre (CPK)
Total cost of running a vehicle divided by distance covered — the number every freight rate should be tested against.
Cost per kilometre is the fleet's fundamental unit economic. Done properly it includes far more than diesel: fuel, tyres, maintenance and parts, driver wages and allowances, tolls, insurance, permits, finance or lease cost, depreciation, and a share of overhead. Fleets that quote from fuel alone are typically working with half the real number.
The distinction that matters commercially is between total kilometres and revenue kilometres. If a quarter of the fleet's distance is run empty, cost per revenue-kilometre is a third higher than cost per total kilometre — and it is the revenue figure that a freight rate has to cover.
It should also be computed per vehicle class and per lane, not as one fleet-wide average. A single blended figure hides that the tippers are losing money while the trailers subsidise them, which is precisely the insight the number exists to provide.
