Empty Running

Kilometres driven with no load — pure cost, and the largest avoidable waste in road freight.

Empty running is any distance covered without revenue-earning cargo: returning from a delivery, repositioning to the next pickup, or moving to a depot. Every one of those kilometres consumes fuel, tolls, tyres and driver time and earns nothing.

Indian road freight typically runs a substantial share of total kilometres empty, and the figure is worse for specialised equipment — tankers and reefers that cannot simply pick up general cargo on the way back. Measuring it honestly is the first step, and many fleets discover their empty percentage is higher than assumed because repositioning moves were never counted.

Reducing it is a matching problem, not a driving problem. Backhaul matching, triangular routing rather than out-and-back lanes, and positioning vehicles to finish near the next likely load all attack it. Cutting empty kilometres by a quarter typically moves cost per revenue-kilometre more than any fuel initiative.
