Cross Docking

Transferring goods straight from inbound to outbound vehicles with little or no storage in between.

Also calledCross-dock

In cross docking, inbound vehicles unload at one side of a facility and the goods move directly across to outbound vehicles, sorted by destination, without going into storage. Dwell time is measured in hours rather than days, and the building functions as a sorting floor rather than a warehouse.

It suits freight that is already allocated to a customer before it arrives — retail replenishment, e-commerce sortation, distribution beats. It does not suit anything needing buffer stock, quality inspection or repacking, because there is no inventory position in which to hold it.

The requirement people underestimate is timing discipline. Cross docking only works if inbound and outbound vehicles arrive within a tight window of each other. Without dock scheduling and reliable ETAs, goods that were meant to flow through end up on the floor, and the facility becomes an unplanned warehouse with no racking.
