4PL (Fourth-Party Logistics)

An orchestrator that manages a company's whole logistics network, including its other providers.

Also calledFourth Party LogisticsLead logistics provider

A 4PL sits a layer above execution. Rather than running trucks and warehouses itself, it designs the network, selects and manages the 3PLs that operate it, and takes responsibility for overall performance. It is a control and integration role rather than an asset role.

The distinction from 3PL is asset ownership and scope. A 3PL is one provider doing one part of the work; a 4PL is a single point of accountability across all providers, typically holding the technology layer and the performance data that spans them.

It suits large, multi-region operations with many providers where the coordination burden itself has become the problem. For a single-region fleet it is usually unnecessary overhead — the coordination it solves does not yet exist.
