Reverse Logistics

Moving goods backwards through the chain — returns, rejections, recalls, packaging and end-of-life assets.

Also calledReturns management

Reverse logistics covers everything travelling against the normal flow: customer returns, rejected consignments, recalled batches, returnable packaging and crates, and equipment going back for repair or disposal. It is a genuine flow in its own right, not an exception.

It is harder to plan than forward logistics because the volume is unpredictable, the items arrive in unknown condition, and each needs a disposition decision — restock, repair, refurbish, scrap. Forward flows push known goods to known destinations; reverse flows pull unknown goods to a decision.

Most operations under-measure it. Returnable packaging in particular tends to be treated as free until someone counts the crates that never came back. Tracking returnable assets on the same system as the vehicles usually reveals a loss rate nobody had quantified.
