Proof of Delivery (POD)
Evidence that a consignment reached the consignee — and the document that unlocks billing.
Proof of Delivery is the record confirming goods were handed to the consignee, in what condition and at what time. Traditionally it is the signed and stamped copy of the LR that travels back to the transporter's office. Increasingly it is captured digitally at the gate as an ePOD.
POD is a commercial instrument as much as an operational one. Most freight contracts make payment conditional on a clean POD, so a missing or disputed POD directly delays cash collection. Fleets that still move paper PODs by truck routinely add ten to fifteen days to their billing cycle purely in document transit.
A defensible POD records more than a signature: the receiver's name, timestamp, geolocation, photographs of the delivered goods, and any shortage or damage noted at the point of handover. Those extra fields are what settle disputes months later.
