Bilty (Builty / Bilti)
The everyday Hindi-belt name for a Lorry Receipt — the same consignment note, different word.
Bilty meaning, in Indian road transport, is simply lorry receipt. Bilty (also spelled builty or bilti) is the colloquial North Indian term for the consignment note a transporter issues when goods are handed over. There is no legal difference between a bilty and an LR; a driver asking for the bilty and a finance team asking for the LR copy are asking for the same document.
The word derives from the English 'bill of lading', shortened over decades of use in transport nagars from Delhi to Kanpur. You will hear it most in booking offices, transport hubs and among owner-drivers, while formal contracts and software tend to say LR or consignment note. Railway bilty is a related usage for goods booked on rail; the road-freight bilty is the one this page covers.
What is bilty in transport, operationally: it is the document that proves the goods were accepted, names the vehicle, and is signed at delivery. Printed transport bilty formats usually run in triplicate — consignor, consignee, transporter — and carry a unique bilty number used for tracking, billing and POD matching.
Because the terms are used interchangeably, fleet software has to accept both. Searching by bilty number and by LR number should return the same consignment, and printed formats should carry both labels so the document is recognised wherever it lands.
