Cold Chain

A cold chain is the complete sequence of refrigerated storage and transport a product passes through — cold room, reefer vehicle, distribution centre, retail chiller. The defining property is continuity: the chain is only as good as its weakest link, and one gap can compromise a consignment that was handled correctly everywhere else.

The vulnerable points are almost never the vehicle in motion. They are the handovers — the loading dock where goods stand in ambient heat, the yard wait with the unit switched off to save fuel, the transhipment between vehicles. Those are also the moments least likely to be recorded.

For pharmaceutical and food customers, evidence matters as much as performance. A consignment delivered at the right temperature but without a continuous logged record can still be rejected, because the customer's own compliance obligations require proof. Continuous logging tied to the consignment is therefore a commercial requirement, not just an operational nicety.
