Hazmat Transport

Hazardous goods — fuels, industrial chemicals, compressed gases, corrosives, explosives — are carried under a separate regulatory regime from general cargo. The vehicle must be built and fitted for the class of goods, display the correct hazard identification panels, and carry prescribed emergency equipment.

Driver requirements are the part most often neglected. Drivers must hold specific training for hazardous goods carriage, and that training has a validity period. Dispatching a load of chemicals with a driver whose hazmat endorsement has lapsed is a licensing failure, not a paperwork one.

Route and timing restrictions apply widely: prohibited tunnels and bridges, restricted urban corridors, and night-movement rules that vary by state and by substance. Emergency response information must travel with the vehicle so that first responders know what they are dealing with before they approach.
