Tyre Retreading
Bonding new tread onto a sound used casing — a fraction of the cost of a new tyre, if the casing is good.
Retreading strips the worn tread from a tyre and bonds fresh rubber onto the existing casing. Because the casing is the expensive part of a truck tyre, a retread costs substantially less than a new tyre while delivering a large share of the service life, which is why it is standard practice in commercial fleets worldwide.
Everything depends on casing condition. A casing that has been run under-inflated, overloaded or with impact damage may be unsuitable, and retreading a compromised casing produces a tyre that fails in service. This is the argument for TPMS: protecting casings for retreading is worth more over a fleet's life than avoiding the punctures alone.
Casings can normally be retreaded a limited number of times before the structure is exhausted, so serial-level tracking matters. A fleet that cannot say how many times a given casing has been retreaded is either scrapping casings with life left or running ones that should have been retired.
