Engine Hours

Engine hours count time the engine is running regardless of distance. For an excavator, crane, genset or reefer unit, distance is meaningless and hours are the only sensible measure of wear, which is why hour meters are standard on off-road equipment.

The measure matters for on-road vehicles too. A truck accumulating heavy idle time is wearing its engine without adding kilometres, so a purely distance-based service schedule will under-service it. Comparing hours against distance gives a rough duty-cycle picture: a high hours-per-hundred-kilometre ratio indicates congestion, long waits or excessive idling.

A practical conversion many fleets use is that one engine hour approximates a fixed number of kilometres of equivalent wear for scheduling purposes. The exact ratio depends on the vehicle and duty cycle, and it should be derived from your own failure history rather than adopted from a manual.
