Preventive Maintenance

Servicing on a planned trigger before failure occurs, rather than repairing after a breakdown.

Also calledPMPlanned maintenanceScheduled maintenance

Preventive maintenance schedules work against a trigger — distance, engine hours, calendar time, fuel consumed — and carries it out before the component fails. The alternative, breakdown maintenance, costs more than the repair alone because it also costs the load, the customer commitment and the recovery.

In a fleet the trigger should be whichever comes first, not a single basis. A long-haul truck hits its distance interval long before its calendar one; a yard shunter or a genset accumulates engine hours while barely moving. Applying a distance-only schedule to a fleet with mixed duty cycles under-services half of it.

The measure worth tracking is PM compliance — the share of scheduled services completed within their window. A fleet with a beautiful schedule and 60% compliance is running reactive maintenance with extra paperwork. Compliance is what separates a maintenance policy from a maintenance intention.
