CBM Calculation
Cubic metres of cargo — length × width × height in metres — used to price and plan volume-limited freight.
CBM is simply length multiplied by width multiplied by height, with all three in metres. One CBM is a cube of one metre a side. For a consignment of several identical cartons, compute the CBM of one and multiply by the count.
It matters because a great deal of freight runs out of space before it runs out of weight. Pricing purely by tonnage on light bulky cargo means giving away the vehicle's cube for nothing, which is why LCL, courier and part-load tariffs are usually expressed per CBM or on a weight-or-measure basis, whichever yields more.
Where cartons are mixed sizes, total CBM understates the space actually consumed, because irregular stacking leaves voids. Load planning software models the arrangement in three dimensions rather than summing volumes, which is what closes the gap between theoretical and achieved fill.
