Weighbridge

The platform scale used to weigh loaded vehicles, and the control point for both billing and compliance.

Also calledTruck scaleDharam kanta

A weighbridge is a heavy platform scale a vehicle drives onto, giving a total or axle-wise weight. In Indian transport it serves two distinct purposes that are easy to conflate: establishing the cargo weight for commercial settlement, and confirming that the vehicle is within its legal limits.

Weighbridges must be verified and stamped under legal metrology rules to be used for trade, and the certificate has an expiry. A slip from an unverified bridge is not reliable evidence in a weight dispute, which matters when a consignee challenges a quantity months later.

In practice the weighbridge is also the fleet's best fuel and pilferage control. Systematic differences between despatch and receipt weights on the same lane, or between the same driver's loads, are visible in the weighment data long before anyone notices a shortage in the stock ledger.
