GPS Tracker
The device that reports a vehicle's position and sensor state to a fleet platform over a cellular link.
A vehicle GPS tracker combines a satellite receiver, a cellular modem and a small controller. It fixes position, buffers readings, and transmits them to a server at a configured interval, along with ignition state, digital inputs and any wired sensors. Buffering matters as much as reporting — a unit that discards data while out of coverage leaves gaps in the trip record.
The specification differences that matter operationally are unglamorous: internal backup battery so the unit keeps reporting if power is cut, tamper detection, wired inputs for fuel and temperature sensors, CAN or OBD access for engine data, and a driver-ID reader input. Position accuracy is broadly comparable across reputable units; these auxiliary capabilities are what separate them.
The most consequential choice is not the device but the protocol. A unit speaking a widely-supported protocol can be moved between platforms; one speaking a proprietary format locks the fleet to a single vendor's software. That is the practical meaning of device-agnostic — being able to change the software without changing 400 devices, or vice versa.
