AIS-140
The Indian standard for vehicle tracking and emergency systems in public service vehicles.
AIS-140 is an Automotive Industry Standard specifying what a tracking installation in a public service vehicle must do. It covers the Vehicle Location Tracking Device, emergency panic buttons accessible to passengers, and the interfaces through which data reaches the designated state command and control centre.
The requirement applies to public service vehicles — buses, taxis and specified categories of commercial transport — rather than to every goods vehicle. Where it applies, the device must be from a certified model and be activated with a working SIM, and both the panic buttons and the backend link must actually function, not merely be fitted.
The point most relevant to fleets is that an AIS-140 device can serve two purposes at once. It reports to the state backend for compliance and, in parallel, feeds the operator's own fleet platform. Fleets that treat compliance and operations as separate problems end up paying for two devices and two SIMs on the same vehicle.
