Driver Score

A composite rating of driving behaviour, used for coaching and — where it is trusted — incentives.

Also calledDriver safety scoreDriver scorecard

A driver score combines behavioural events — harsh braking, acceleration, cornering, overspeeding, idling, and where fitted ADAS and DMS events — into a single figure. It exists so that behaviour can be compared, coached and rewarded rather than only discussed after an incident.

Whether it works depends almost entirely on whether drivers believe it is fair. Two things determine that: normalising for conditions outside the driver's control, and giving a route to dispute an event with the evidence attached. A score computed from raw event counts across different route types will be dismissed, and correctly so.

Linking the score to money changes its status from a report to a live incentive, and that is where fleets see behaviour actually move. It also raises the stakes on fairness — a score affecting pay must be explainable event by event, which means the underlying data has to be visible to the driver, not just to the supervisor.
