DMS (Driver Monitoring System)
An inward-facing camera detecting fatigue, distraction and phone use at the wheel.
Where ADAS watches the road, a Driver Monitoring System watches the driver. It tracks eye closure, head position and gaze direction to detect drowsiness and distraction, and typically also flags phone use, smoking and absent seatbelt. Most systems give the driver an in-cab audible warning first, then report the event.
Fatigue is the strongest safety case. Micro-sleeps on long night runs are a leading cause of serious commercial vehicle accidents, and unlike speeding they leave no trace until the crash. A DMS is one of the few tools that detects the condition while it is still correctable.
It is also the most sensitive technology to deploy, because it points a camera at a person for their whole shift. Fleets that introduce it without explaining what is recorded, who can view it and how long footage is retained get resistance and tampering. Handled openly — with in-cab warning before any reporting, and a dispute path — it is generally accepted.
