ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems)

Forward-facing sensing that warns a driver of collisions, lane departure and unsafe following distance.

Also calledADASCollision avoidance system

ADAS uses a forward camera, and sometimes radar, to interpret the road ahead and warn the driver before an incident. In commercial vehicles the core functions are forward collision warning, lane departure warning, headway monitoring for following distance, and pedestrian detection. Higher tiers add autonomous emergency braking that acts rather than warns.

For a fleet the value is in two places. The immediate one is fewer collisions. The less obvious one is that ADAS events are an early behavioural signal: a driver accumulating headway warnings is tailgating consistently, which predicts an eventual rear-end collision long before one happens.

The failure mode is alert fatigue. Systems tuned too sensitively fire constantly in dense Indian traffic, drivers stop reacting, and the safety benefit evaporates. Calibrating thresholds to the operating environment, and reviewing which alerts drivers are ignoring, matters more than the specification of the hardware.
