E-Way Bill Distance

The distance field on an e-Way Bill is the approximate road distance between the place of despatch and the place of delivery. It is not a formality — it is the input that sets validity, so understating it produces a bill that expires before the truck arrives.

The portal auto-suggests a distance from the PIN codes entered, based on map data, and allows the actual figure to be entered within a tolerance above that suggestion. Where the practical route is materially longer than the straight-line suggestion — mountain routes, restricted-vehicle diversions, mandatory bypasses — the declared distance should reflect the route the vehicle will genuinely take.

For fleets, the reliable approach is to feed the distance from the same routing engine that plans the trip, so the EWB validity and the planned journey time are derived from one number rather than two.
