Volumetric weight calculator — and what the divisor is costing you

Enter parcels in centimetres or inches. You get volumetric weight, chargeable weight and the billing round-up — plus the same freight priced across every divisor in common use, so you can see exactly what your rate contract is worth.

Parcels

6.00

The same parcel across every divisor

The divisor is the whole negotiation. Moving from 5000 to 6000 cuts the billed weight by 17% on identical freight — which is why it belongs in your rate contract in writing.

Volume is binding. You are paying for 3.00 kg of air 2.0× the real weight.

At 2.0× you are shipping mostly empty space. Before renegotiating the rate, check whether a smaller box or denser packing removes the problem outright — it is usually cheaper than the discount you would win.

Measure the outer carton at its widest point, including tape, handles and any bulge. Carriers scan the cuboid the parcel occupies on the belt, not the box you intended to ship. Divisors are contractual and negotiable — confirm yours in writing.

The formula

How volumetric weight is calculated

One multiplication and one division. The argument is only ever about which number you divide by.

Base formula

Volumetric kg = L × W × H (cm) ÷ divisor

A 40 × 30 × 25 cm carton is 30,000 cm³. At the courier divisor of 5000 that bills as 6 kg — even if the contents weigh 3 kg. At the air and surface divisor of 6000 the same box bills as 5 kg.

Then chargeable weight = max(actual, volumetric), rounded up. Every parcel is measured on its own and the results summed; the consignment is never treated as one block.

Divisors in common use in India

÷ 5000
Courier and express — DHL Express, Blue Dart, and the aggregators built on them. The default assumption if nothing is stated.
÷ 6000
IATA air freight, and most Indian surface cargo services. More generous: the same parcel bills ~17% lighter.
÷ 4750
Used in parts of the India Post domestic parcel stream.
÷ 4000
Aggressive. Turns up in some reseller and LTL contracts — worth challenging.

Divisors are contractual, negotiable and revised without much fanfare. Treat these as the conventions to start from, not as any carrier’s binding rate — read your own rate card.

Shipping a full consignment rather than parcels?

If you are working out whether a load fits a 14 ft body or a 20 ft container rather than what a courier will bill, the CBM calculator is the better tool — it totals cubic metres and checks the load against Indian truck bodies and container capacities.

FAQ

Volumetric weight questions, answered

What operations teams ask the first time an invoice comes in heavier than the parcel.

Volumetric weight — also called dimensional or DIM weight — converts the space a parcel occupies into a kilogram figure the carrier can bill against. A vehicle runs out of space long before it runs out of weight capacity, so carriers charge on whichever is greater: what the parcel actually weighs, or what its size is worth.

The expensive version of this problem is not the maths

It is discovering, three months later, that a carrier has been billing a 4000 divisor on a contract that says 5000. FleetERP recalculates chargeable weight on every consignment from your own carton masters, reconciles it against what the carrier actually invoiced, and flags the difference before the payment run rather than after.
